The Perfect Changing Mat

by / Thursday, 27 August 2015 / Published in sport

The Dry Mat evolved simply due to demand from customers.  We already provided a basic mat in our XBag that people loved – so handy for getting changed outdoor on rough or mucky ground, or indoors on wet changing rooms. People wanted a separate mat that they could buy without buying a bag – fair enough we thought – so we decided to engineer a higher quality mat with added features that people could buy on its own. We’ve seen too many people getting mucked-up outdoors, or standing on benches indoors trying to keep their feet dry!

I worked with Spear Product Design to create the perfect changing mat and looked at numerous options, but the answer was staring me in the face! After working in the Drinks Industry for many years i realised that the answer was actually in the pub…. but then it often is  🙂  Bar runners – the flat material mats often used on bars to absorb spilled drinks – were made from microfiber with a rubber bottom and could be designed, shaped and branded exactly as i needed. They were also made locally which was a massive bonus and made the creative process much easier. So after a few months of sampling, tweaking, improving the texture and finalising design, shape etc the Dry Mat was ready to go and launched with 5 colour options. We were delighted to win a design award not long after launch, highlighting the unique and dynamic design of the product.  Originally we launched the mat in a cardboard pack which looked premium and presented the product well, however we always felt we could have a more functional pack.  This arrived with our second batch of mats which was a reusable plastic pack used to store the Dry Mat and sealed when wet.

The Dry Mats are very noticeable in triathlon transition, so as well as helping athletes get changed they can also mark out your spot.  We love attending events across the UK and Ireland and seeing our Dry Mats being used, we even spotted a Dry Mat on TV being used by eventual winner Ewan Brown during the Slateman Triathlon. The mats are also used by a range of people participating in watersports and outdoor leisure pursuits, basically anywhere you need to change footwear it helps, but they are also used for sitting on during hiking or in the car to prevent smelly seats – something we didnt envisage when we created them.  They are also used widely indoors for wet changing room floors, swimming pools etc, as they are hygienic and can help prevent the spread of viruses. It can save you putting you towel on the floor, which is only going to suck up moisture from the floor anyway.

As the Dry Mats are created locally they can be adapted and printed as required so we have provided batches to events and teams in numerous countries, with their logos and colours. These can be used for years and are very noticeable so are a great advertising tool.  We are currently looking at various options for new colours and line extensions for the Dry Mats such as a larger family size – anything you would like to see??? Just let us know, we create our products for you!
